HEROS Trustees

HEROS Charity is indebted to its hard-working Board of Trustees...

Victoria Hopgood

Victoria qualified as a solicitor in 1988. She originally worked in Newbury before moving to Hungerford in 1996 to set up the firm Dickins Hopgood Chidley with her partners. Victoria has specialised in Commercial Property. She also has considerable experience of all aspects of Residential Property.

Victoria and Grace met in 2013 and Victoria agreed to become a trustee and add her knowledge and expertise in the legal field to strengthen the board. Victoria has a great admiration for the charity and its achievements.

Jackie Hubbard - Joint Chairman

Jackie is a tax advisor who currently works for one of the "big four" accountancy firms. She has been a racehorse owner for many years and has also owned horses on the eventing circuit. She has had two ex-racehorses, KINTWIN who she owned for 12 years following his retirement from racing and her current horse JOVE, who she rehomed from HEROS in 2008. As a result Jackie can speak first hand from the perspective of being a HEROS lessee.

Jackie has known Grace for many years and has always taken a keen interest in the work of HEROS Charity, acting as the Secretary at the HEROS Horse Show.

Jessica Kidd

Jessica is a veterinary surgeon who is board certified in Equine Surgery and met Grace whilst heading the hospital at the Valley Equine Hospital in Lambourn. She is now a freelance surgeon, which allows her more time for other pursuits such as being involved in charities and spending time with her twin boys.

She has presented veterinary presentations at national and international seminars, has taught numerous CPD courses on specialised equine subjects and was an examiner for the RCVS certificates six times. She holds the RCVS certificate in Equine Surgery (Orthopaedics), is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and is an RCVS and European recognised specialist in Equine Surgery. She is the chief editor of 'An Atlas of Equine Ultrasonography'.

She is a keen motorcyclist and one of the original members of the “Vets with Horsepower” team, who do annual motorcycle lecture tours and have raised more than £280,000 for working equid charities. Through working in Lambourn she came to know Grace and the work HEROS does, and has treated a number of HEROS horses. She is delighted to be able to take a more involved role with HEROS.

Anne Richardson - Joint Chairman

Anne is a clinical psychologist by background but now works in policy consultancy after many years at the Department of Health. She has a longstanding interest in horses and more recently in racing.

With her husband, Nick Attenborough, her involvement in HEROS Charity began when THURLESTONE ROCK, their ex-sprint handicapper, was happily rehomed after being rehabilitated and retrained by HEROS. As one of the HEROS Trustees Anne can represent a user's view of the service the charity provides, as well as offer a range of professional knowledge and experience. She has been a trustee of HEROS since the start and a great supporter of the charity, putting in a lot of voluntary extra hours to help keep the charity afloat.

Mary Robinson - Company Secretary

Mary has been involved in the racing industry most of her working life. She has worked at the grass roots level from riding out when younger and being travelling head girl, to riding in point to point races and training for a short time under permit. She changed direction, becoming a racing secretary, and then started a business advising trainers and jockeys on their accounting practices. Currently she still runs this business but it has expanded to include a variety of clients from outside the racing industry too. Joining the HEROS team from inception, she has known Grace for at least 25 years.

Ben Samuels-Brown

Ben met Grace when bringing his horses to North Farm Stud for livery. Ben works at Newbury Racecourse and was very interested in HEROS Charity and what it does. He has been a welcome member of the Board and as an accountant his worth is very useful.

Ann Shankland

Ann and her late husband Chris were long term owners in racing keeping their horses, when at rest and recuperation, at North Farm Stud in Grace’s care. They have always cared what happened to their horses when their racing careers ended, and as such, have been friends with Grace for a long time and thoroughly understand the racing industry, Ann was an obvious choice to become a Trustee when Grace set up HEROS Charity as an example of a responsible owner.

Judy Smith

Judy worked for North Farm Stud from 2008 to 2011 as Office Manager. During that time she helped HEROS set up a solid management and administration structure and created good practice within the company working closely with George Greener (ex-chairman of HEROS) and Grace. Judy moved to work for Wyse Computers but was still very much involved and interested in the vision of HEROS Charity. In February 2013 she agreed to become a trustee and is a very welcome addition to the Board.

Jill Sutton

Jill joined HEROS Charity as a trustee in 2006 after a spending most of her working life in the motorsport world, first as Champion Lady GB rally driver and then as Company Secretary for her husband's motorsport business in London.
Jill has had a passion for horses since childhood so HEROS was a perfect fit and she is one of our biggest supporters. In 1984, Jill and her husband moved to Warwickshire and brought a 66 acre farm where they bred a number of horses for eventing. Her oldest and dearest SPARKY retired and was PTS at North Farm Stud at a ripe old age.

Jill also set up a German Shepherd rescue centre and had great pleasure in finding good homes for many dogs. Jill helps enormously with find raising events as she has a great deal of knowledge in this field as runs her own fund raising events for the local school.
