1. Horses should be treated for tapeworms twice yearly, in approximately April and October. We prefer to use the single dose tapewormer like Equitape or Eqvalan Duo and give them the correct dose relating to their weight. Use a weight tape to determine the approximate weight or a weigh scale preferably.
2. Each horse should have a Panacur Guard 5 day wormer course in March annually. This deals with the treatment and control of adult and immature roundworms which are around at that time. It is a good wormer to use if your horse looks wormy and is not readily putting on weight.
3. For the rest of the year you need to use either an Ivermectin, Fenbendazole or Moxidectin (Equest) based product and alternate brands annually, if possible trying not to repeat in under 2 years, as the worms grow immune to the product given time.
4. Most syringes contain 600kg. It is better to slightly overdose than underdose as most wormers are very safe, but be careful with Equest with should not be overdosed in foals. If you have any queries with which products to use please do not hesitate to contact us.
5. Foal should start their worm programme at around 6 weeks and have the right amount for their weight. 6 week old foals will be around 125 – 150kg depending on breed and size obviously. Foals do not need to be tapewormed or have a 5 days wormer until they are well over 1 year old but should maintain a good regular worm programme. The mare should also be wormed correctly through their pregnancy as they pass worms on to the foal.
