HEROS re-trains ex-racehorses available for rehoming either on long-term loan or for sale. All horses are subject to our terms and conditions and the procedures for sale horses are described below.
HEROS horses are only sold with the express agreement of the previous owner and this would have been specified when they gifted the horse to HEROS.
All our horses are shown, with pictures and a description, on our website www.heroscharity.org. We arrange visits for people to view horses at either 11am or 2pm Monday-Friday and some Saturday mornings. We try to avoid Sundays as the staff here have such a heavy workload, however if there is no alternative we will try to accommodate you.
We request a donation to be made to HEROS each time you visit us. This helps tremendously towards rehoming other horses and means that we spend as much time as necessary with you. The donation MUST be made over the phone at the time of booking by credit or debit card.
To make the right decision you are invited to try the horse several times. We mutually want to be confident and happy that you have chosen the right horse. Horses are never allowed to go out on trial.
The price of each horse varies depending on its ability, temperament, conformation and soundness. A lifetimes experience in selling and rehoming ex-racehorses means we price our horses very accurately.
When you find a suitable horse we suggest that you have at least a 2 stage vetting (eyes, heart, lungs and trotting up) carried out on the horse by a vet, prior to purchase. If it is a higher value horse you may want to have a 5 stage vetting done. This is more detailed and includes wind testing and flexion tests on all four legs. We also invite you to be present at the vetting. You have the option of either using your own vet or we can arrange an appointment with one of the vets local to us.
Once the vetting is done and you decide to go ahead with the purchase, we require a sale agreement to be signed and witnessed by both yourself and HEROS. Payment has to be made in cash or banker’s draft before the horse is taken or delivered. The agreement will also state that, should you no longer be able to keep the horse or are selling it on, HEROS should be informed. The horse could then come back to us to sell on for you or we would like you to give us the new purchaser’s details. This would mean we could follow the horse until the time of its retirement (whether through injury or age) and take it back into the charity.
We require a non-racing agreement to be signed with every sale, this ensures that the horse will not be able to run again, in either point-to-points or under rules or both. Following this, the horse can leave the stud. We can deliver the horse to your choice of destination and the current rate is £1.50 +VAT per mile, round trip.
We request that you get the horse freezemarked, with a HEROS-recognised freezemark prefix. We have negotiated exceptional discounted rates with Farmkey which are passed on to you.
If you are interested in a particular horse from the website it is always worth giving us a ring immediately as these horses go very quickly. To find out more please give one of us a call on the following numbers.
